RBI New Currency Guidelines 2025 : The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has concomitantly laid down new guidelines regarding notes with effect from December 24, 2024. The rules apply to Rs 10, 20, 100, and 500 notes. The main purpose of what is being introduced is simply to deal with the problems arising from counterfeit currency notes and improve the quality of notes available to the public.
New Security Features
The Reserve Bank of India has included several very significant security features in the currency. The new currency will contain a special watermark, which will be clearer and more complex than before. It will have a fixed luminous security thread in the midpoint of the note, changing color when the angle at which it is viewed changes. Moreover, it will also have an image that would be visible only when the note is tilted. Other new technologies like micro text and color shifting ink have also been employed.
Features Of Star Series
Star series notes have special importance in the new guidelines of these rules. It means that these notes will carry a special star (*) mark on the number panel between the prefix and the number. The Star Notes are mainly meant to replace defective notes, and their serial numbers may differ.
Future Of Old Notes
An organized program has been drawn up by the Reserve Bank for phasing out the old design notes from circulation. Although the old notes will remain legal tender for now, the old notes will gradually be withdrawn by the banks. The general public is advised to deposit old notes in the banks at the earliest.
New Responsibilities Will Be Allotted To The Banks
Under the new rules, banks will inherit special responsibilities. They will have to look after the quality of the notes and give priority to giving new notes to the customers. Bank staff will also be specially trained to detect counterfeit notes. Only well-printed notes will be fetched in ATMs.
Important Instructions For The Public
The general public must know the security features of the new notes. Star series notes are completely legal tender, and they should be accepted. All suspicious notes should be reported immediately to the bank or police. A special emphasis had to be laid on the security of those notes and their cleanliness.
Also, Digital Payments Gaining Significance
The Reserve Bank also propagates digital payments along with cash transactions. Digital payment apps like UPI and BHIM are being pushed. All the attention is on debit and credit card usage. There is also a reward and cash back facility for cashless transactions.
Future Plans
The Reserve Bank is planning many other substantial changes in the near future. These include the introduction of polymer notes, enhanced security in note design, a wider digital rupee, and ATM note-deposit facilities. The ability to check the genuineness of the note through a mobile app will also start soon.
